Byron Terry: Finding Opportunity From Setbacks

When I transferred to Kennesaw State University in 2020, I had just undergone right knee surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus. The transition process was tough because it was in the middle of Covid and I wasn’t on campus, so that isolation was difficult.

I got to campus in spring of 2021 and was determined to make the most of my experience and have an impact on campus. I facilitated Kennesaw State University’s first mental health panel in collaboration in the student athlete advisory committee (SAAC). The event was a success and I knew I wanted to continue doing more work with student-athlete mental health.

I tried out for the University's football team in August 2021, and although I didn't make the roster, it was still an accomplishment battling back from medical issues, injures and such. I ended up playing intramural flag football instead. I treated it like real football as far as my preparation and leadership went.

In my senior year of 2022, I aimed to try out for the football team again. Unfortunately, paperwork issues prevented me from participating. The disappointment was tough to process, and I shared more about this experience in the first episode of my "My Path" docuseries on my main YouTube channel.

Even with these challenges, I remained focused on making a difference. I launched my BJT Inspire merchandise line, with a portion of the proceeds supporting food pantries and other community initiatives. I also became a Campus Captain for The Hidden Opponent, where I learned so much!

After graduating from Kennesaw State in 2023, I transitioned into the world of sports media, launching my own show and podcast, "The BJT Show." The platform features in-depth analysis, vlogs, interviews with college and professional athletes and coaches, debates, and collaborations with content creators. The show has been doing well and I’m excited about its potential to inspire and inform.

Looking back on my time at Kennesaw State, I’m proud of how I turned challenges into opportunities. From advocating for mental health to pursuing my passion for sports and media, my journey has been one of resilience and growth. I’m grateful for every experience, as they’ve shaped who I am today and prepared me for the road ahead.
