As The Hidden Opponent is in the midst of its July 2024 Campus Captains application cycle, a few of our current and former Campus Captains share their experience in the program!
Dominic Younger plays baseball, golf, and runs cross country at Rosemont College. He is interested in mental health advocacy because of his own experiences and wishing that he knew the resources that were available to him to aid mental health struggles.
Why did you join the Campus Captain program?
I joined the Campus Captain program to provide those same resources that I had hoped for to other students that may be experiencing similar issues. As well, I wanted to learn practices to improve my mental health.
What has been your favorite part of the program?
My favorite part of the program has been the exclusive panels that were offered to Campus Captains to further develop our knowledge of a variety of subjects such as “Overcoming the fear of failure” or “Learning how to love yourself”.
Can you elaborate on some activities or events you participated in or hosted this year, whether that be at your school or through the THO community?
An event that I particularly enjoyed putting together was the first mental health forum that our campus hosted which aimed to gather the perspective of the students at our school and to provide information about common stigmas in college students and possible ways to help deal with them. We also used this to gather ideas from our community.
What has been your biggest accomplishment as a CC? What positive changes have you seen on your campus through the program?
I feel like my biggest accomplishment as a campus captain has been to be a resource to others and utilize the information that I gather from seminars to help shift the perspective in other athletes. I have seen more athletes, speaking about their mental health whether to coaches, close friends, or counselors.
What has been your biggest takeaway from the CC program?
My biggest takeaway from the Campus Captain program has been that there is a resource for everything. And you can find those resources by searching on your own or connecting with individuals who can help you identify those resources.
What advice or recommendations do you have for athletes who are interested in applying to the program?
For any athletes interested in applying for this position, I would definitely recommend it. This program will help you become a better version of yourself and become more well-versed in the mental health world.
